Master of monumental and conditionally universal scenography. He studied painting, sculpture, graphics, and design in Regensburg and Wiesbaden. He worked at major drama theatres across Europe: in Düsseldorf, Bonn, Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Zurich, Stockholm, and Copenhagen. He created sets and costumes for opera houses in Antwerp, Wiesbaden, Leipzig, Dresden, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, English National Opera in London, the Opéra-Comique in Paris, the Berlin State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
In Russia, he is known as the set designer for Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman" (Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, 2004, directed by Peter Konwitschny).
His collaborative works with Philipp Himmelmann include Verdi's "Don Carlos" (Berlin State Opera, 2007), Puccini's "Tosca" (Bregenz, 2007), Handel's "Tamerlano" (Bonn, 2010), the Mozart – Da Ponte trilogy (2011–2014, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden), and others.
From 2004 to 2010, he was a professor of scenography and costume design at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.
He was twice named "Set Designer of the Year" by the prestigious magazine Opernwelt (1996, 2009). Recipient of the British Laurence Olivier Award in the category "Best New Opera Production" for his set design of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" (Covent Garden, 2010).
