Biography

Swedish opera singer, dramatic soprano and mezzo-soprano, renowned performer of the Wagnerian repertoire. 

Katarina Dalayman was born in 1963 in Stockholm and entered the Stockholm Conservatory. While still a student, she made her debut as Sieglinde ("Die Walküre"). In 1991, she became a soloist at the Royal Swedish Opera, debuting as Amelia Grimaldi ("Simon Boccanegra"). On that stage, she performed such roles as Mimì ("La Bohème"), Desdemona ("Otello"), Salome and Elektra (in the eponymous operas by R. Strauss), Brünnhilde in the "Ring Cycle", and others. In 2000, she received the title of Court Singer to His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

As a guest soloist, Dalayman performed at many prestigious opera houses in Europe and the United States. In 1997, she had great success at the Bavarian State Opera as Ariadne ("Ariadne auf Naxos"). In 2001, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Brangäne ("Tristan und Isolde") and her Paris National Opera debut as Kundry ("Parsifal"); in 2002, she made her Royal Opera House London debut as Judith ("Bluebeard's Castle" by Bartók). In 2005, she first sang Brünnhilde ("The Ring of the Nibelung") at the Royal Swedish Opera. She later performed this role on the world's major stages: the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris National Opera, Salzburg Easter Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival, and others. 

At the height of her career, Dalayman was also renowned for her interpretations of such dramatic roles as Katerina ("Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" by Shostakovich), Isolde ("Tristan und Isolde"), Lisa ("The Queen of Spades"), and Marie ("Wozzeck"). 

In 2017, she switched to the mezzo-soprano repertoire and has successfully performed such roles as Fricka ("Die Walküre"), Klytämnestra ("Elektra"), Madame de Croissy ("Dialogues des Carmélites"), Herodias ("Salome"), Amneris ("Aida"), the Duchess ("Suor Angelica"), the Foreign Princess ("Rusalka" by Dvořák), and the Kostelnička ("Jenůfa"). In 2019, she took part in the world premiere of the English version of Hans Abrahamsen's opera "The Snow Queen" at the Bavarian State Opera.
